Dr. Peter Coleman Biographical Sketch Peter Coleman graduated from Otago Medical School in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1980. He worked as an intern and resident rotating in a number of hospitals in New Zealand immigrating to the United States in 1983. After completing a family practice residency in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and a one year substance abuse fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia in 1989 he began working in the fields of substance abuse and family practice. He is board certified in family practice and by the American Society of Addiction Medicine as a specialist in addictive diseases. In his family practice he is the solo practitioner specializing in Family Practice needs, especially for patients recovering from chemical dependency. In the field of substance abuse medicine he has held a number of positions, including Medical Director for substance abuse services at the Psychiatric Institute of Richmond and the Medical Director of outpatient substance abuse services at Charter Westbrook Hospital. In 1990, Dr. Coleman started a pioneering outpatient detoxification program at New Dimensions, a clinic he also helped to start. This was the first program of its kind in Central Virginia, offering detoxification from all major drugs of abuse, completely on an outpatient basis. In 1998, he was appointed as clinical assistant professor at the Medical College of Virginia and appointed as Medical Director of the outpatient substance abuse services for the MCV Family Counseling Center. Dr. Coleman has helped educate medical students at the Medical College of Virginia on the issues of substance abuse and has helped train family practice residents at the Hanover Family Practice Residency Program. He has written a number of articles for medical journals and a book chapter on substance abuse. As a family practice resident, he was awarded the McNeil Award for original research for a project he completed on attitudes of family practitioners towards substance abuse patients. In 1998, Dr. Coleman started performing Ultra-Rapid Detoxifications (anesthesia assisted detoxifications) for heroin and other opiate addicts. To date, his staff has completed over 400 detoxifications. He began his own recovery from chemical dependence in 1984. He started experimenting with drugs and alcohol as a teenager and his use escalated over the years. In the end Dr. Coleman had a near fatal overdose of morphine. Fortunately, he was resuscitated and was put in a 4-month intensive treatment program. He has been attending 12-step programs and working a recovery program since that time. He feels extremely blessed to be able to continue his own recovery and help others to do the same. For more information regarding Dr. Coleman, please visit www.petercolemanmd.ehcmd.com.
