IMPROVED PROGRAM

Recent developments by Peter R. Coleman, MD, the Center's Director, and his staff have given the CATC a much improved program called the  Accelerated Detoxification Technique . This new technique, developed in 2000, is much easier on the patient, is more effective, safer and much less expensive than other treatments available.

In the past we used the Ultra Rapid Detoxification (URD) technique that was developed in Europe in the 1980s. The URD method involved putting hundreds of patients under general anesthesia in an acute hospital setting and rapidly injecting the drug Naltrexone to flush all remaining narcotics from the brain receptors. While we had no major complications with URD we found this was a very uncomfortable procedure for our patients. When they woke up from the anesthesia they usually felt, as they described it, "absolutely awful". It was very expensive because of the hospital setting required for the anesthesia. As Dr. Coleman himself is a recovering addict, he understands this intense level of pain and has dedicated his work to developing a better way to help.

EASIER, SAFER, MORE EFFECTIVE AND LESS EXPENSIVE

The Accelerated Detoxification Technique's unique advantages include:

• Much Easier on the patient through the use of a number of medicines including Ultram plus other sedatives.
• Safer in that no general anesthesia is needed
• More Effective with the use of a long term Naltrexone implant - over 99% of CATC patients have completed the crucial detoxification phase of the technique
• Less Expensive because the technique is performed on an outpatient basis

BETTER THAN BUPRENEX

The new process is also easier on the patient because the drug  Ultram  is used versus  Buprenex  in the new technique. On using Ultram Dr. Coleman said, "In my opinion Ultram is a better drug than Buprenex because it is easier on the patient as it relieves the withdrawal symptoms, especially in those first few days."

The combination of these advantages makes the Accelerated Detoxification Technique the preferred and affordable method of treating and detoxifying narcotic addicted patients today. This method, with the added element of a reliable support person to assist during the process, is showing remarkable results in helping patients get their lives back on track.

NALTREXONE IMPLANTS

Over 99% of all patients get completely detoxified through the Accelerated Detoxification Technique and started on Naltrexone. Once the detoxification phase is complete we insert the Naltrexone implant completely blocking the impact of any opiates for at least six weeks. Getting through this critical period gives CATC patients a significant head start in staying drug free permanently. We have been very impressed with the effectiveness of the Naltrexone implant and recommend it for all our patients.

While there are never any guarantees that a patient won't go back to using addictive narcotics, this new method, if followed by a strong commitment to stay in the recovery program, offers the very best chance of a patient getting and staying clean.
